The Magnitude of the College Alcohol Problem

Alcohol use on college campuses in the United States has become synonymous with college culture. Modern day college students face ever-challenging pressures to cope with the reality of college culture and the social consequences that exist surrounding the issue. College offers new students a sense of independence and personal freedom, empowering them to make their own decisions as young adults. These decisions are often times destructive, resulting in numerous problems from legal issues and declined grades, to blackouts, high-risk sexual activity, and even death from overdose. The fact of the matter is that 1,700 college students every year die from alcohol-related emergencies, 19% of whom die directly from alcohol overdose. This is about 400 students every year...

SEMS members protecting their peers.

 

Goal

To support new and established student groups that provide peer-to-peer (P2P) interventions aligned with the Mission of SEMS Foundation by supplying easily accessible and user friendly material supplies, templates, guidance, and financial support.

Who can be a member?

General Membership is open to any established student/community groups, or any students who wish to start up a student/community group.

Benefits

General Membership gives you access to our Student Group Resource Guide, which offers a number of document templates and guidance for Student Group planning, operations, and management. You will also be provided the personal guidance SEMS Foundation staff.

Premier Membership

Premier members are Student Groups that meet the following conditions:

1. Recognized as an official student or community group.

2. That their mission, or a substantial part of their mission parallels that of SEMS Foundation, including but not limited to:

 - Student managed and staffed.

 - Reduce risk associated with binge drinking and drug abuse.

Benefits of Premier Membership

In 2011, SEMS Foundation will award $7,000.00 in Scholarships and $7,000.00 in Grants to Premier Members.

In order to qualify for Scholarships, Premier Members must provide documentation of the following requirements by April 01, annually:

Aggregate data from the previous 12 months of: student group membership count; categorized student group service participation count (CPR, alcohol edu, and/or EMS); categorized service client count (CPR, alcohol edu, and/or EMS)

New/updated alcohol educations, and/or EMS Protocols. Note that if changes are not made to alcohol educations or EMS Protocols, they do not need to be resubmitted. Alcohol Educations and EMS Protocols must meet SEMS Foundation Standards

Annual Budget, and previous year's Level 1 and 2 accounting.

Signed statement from faculty/staff advisor verifying the accuracy of all documented information.

Once qualified for Scholarships, Premier Members are automatically qualified for Grants.

Membership Application

Once your Membership Application is accepted, and confirmed, you will be given a password for access to Membership resources.
